MenD - Mens Development Programme

paul_small.jpg
The MenD Developmental Programme was developed in 2007 by IOSIS staff member, John Thrush. It is a therapeutically based programme that uses one to one format to approach the area of anger management counseling. MenD transcends the traditional approach to  working with anger management, the programme is unique and cutting-edge, dealing not only with anger and relationship dysfunction, it explores the root causes of a man's destructive actions, including grief, loss and abandonment.

It incorporates one to one counseling components to first establish a level of self-awareness and then address the more external issues. MenD uses Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT), to clarify thoughts and feeling and how they relate to behavioural actions, and understanding triggers and implementing alternatives to the action.

MenD also incoporates Maori concepts such as Nga Tapa Wha Well-Being Model, Whakatauki (Proverbs), and Karakia/Waiata (Prayer and Song).

Other Topics covered are:
  • Violation
  • Gratification
  • Conflict Resolutions
  • Offence Mapping
  • Prolem Solving Skills
  • What is a Warrior?
  • Blocks
  • Communication Skills
  • Relapse Prevention
  • Lifestyle Balance
  • Negotiation Skills

We believe that there has been a gap in traditional social work approach in families. Many programs work with Mother and Child, but push Dad out of the picture. We believe that families need fathers and that many fathers need help in order to examine their behaviour and responses. This work has a profound impact on the entire family.

Criteria:
  • Willingness to participate in sessions.
  • Willingness to learn and implement skills learnt.
  • Willingness to attend all required sessions.

ruby1.jpgThe name IOSIS is a greek work meaning "the process by which a base metal becomes gold". It is the power of a miraculous transformation and it is our inspiration.

We believe strongly in the power of transformation in people's lives; that despite the challenges they face, we know they can make significant changes for the sake of their children. We are committed to providing a set of practical support and learning processes to encourage, educate and come alongside families who are struggling to change habits of violence, addiction and offending to help them create a safe and secure environment for the children.p_2.gif
