A Day in the Life of a Merivale Social Worker
9:00am
After our morning Karakia, I talk through aspects of the Circle of Security with the ladies. This looks at their past experience of being parented and what they need to change to become great mums for their own children.
10:00am
I meet with some of the Merivale team to discuss resources we are using in our residential parenting programme.

One of the mums had a medical appointment. She’s called me to tell me she is finished, so I dash out quickly to pick her up from the doctors.
2:00pm
Child, Youth and Family have emailed me about the older children of one our mums. They’ve confirmed the kids will be visiting this weekend. Their mum will be so excited. She hasn’t seen them for several months.

I set up the children’s library and play area, ready for when the children return from preschool and school. Playtime gives me a chance to observe how the ladies interact with their children, and how the children socialise together.
4:45pm
WINZ calls about our meeting tomorrow. They need a document from one of the ladies. Each week I provide back-up support to the mums by accompanying them to appointments at the WINZ office, to discuss issues with benefits and allowances.

My last duty of the day is checking that the mum who went to the doctor today understands the prescription she has received for her son. Together we check the dosage before she gives it to him.
