Finding a place to belong

Posted on June 20, 2014 by Iosis

Danny's storyDanny* had a partner and young children, but spent more time roaming the streets than with them. His relationship with his parents was also rocky. They disapproved of his lifestyle and he had deliberately cut himself off from them and their culture.

A stint in jail caused him to re-evaluate his life. His parole officer referred him to Iosis’s Family Resilience Programme. The programme facilitators helped Danny take an honest look at his past and how it was affecting his relationships. Armed with the relationship skills he learnt there, he resolved to become a better partner and father, and to respect his family and put them before his own wants and needs.

To their mutual delight, Danny and his parents reconciled. For the first time since he was a teenager, they started talking to him in their first language. For Danny it was a sign that he had come home. Emotionally and culturally, he had rediscovered his place of belonging.
