Shana’s story
“I’m feeling in control now.”
As a solo Mum with three children, several unexpected expenses left Shana feeling very stressed about money. Thankfully, she was referred to our financial mentor, Karen, who helped her get back on track.
Money has always been tight for Shana and her three children, but until recently she was scraping through. Living on a benefit, renting her home and raising three kids (including one autistic child with special needs), every dollar has to stretch a long way. Shana’s mother lives with them and helps where she can, but it’s still a constant juggling act.
When a series of unexpected expenses hit, things became overwhelming. Shana’s stepfather passed away, and she needed to travel to Samoa for the funeral. Then the usual school costs were piling up, along with extra expenses to support her child with autism.
“Towards the end of last year, I was really struggling,” she explains. “My personal loans end in April and May 2026, and I was so close to paying them off. I asked the loan company if I could have an extension or payment holiday, but because my credit rating isn’t good, they said no. Then I asked some of my relatives for help, but they’re also facing similar pressures.”
Feeling stressed, stuck and unsure what to do next, Shana contacted MoneyTalks, which provides free support on money matters. They referred her to Karen, our financial mentor at Iosis. “I felt really awkward and I’m also quite shy, so it was really hard for me to ask for help,” she says. “However, it couldn’t have gone better – Karen immediately made me feel comfortable.”
Together, Shana and Karen carefully worked through her current financial situation and explored her options. “Karen was so supportive and helped me fill out the forms when I got stuck. We decided that a KiwiSaver hardship withdrawal would be the best way forward – it means I can pay off the personal loans and get myself back on track,” she explains.
“I never once felt judged or ashamed. Karen was kind, calm and very encouraging the whole time,” reflects Shana. “She worked with me to create a new budget which I now use every day – and she put me in touch with other organisations that may be able to help with benefits like a TAS (Temporary Additional Support).”
Today, it’s like a huge weight has been lifted off Shana’s shoulders. “I’ve gone from being stressed and worried to feeling motivated and in control,” she says. “I understand my money so much better now. And the best part is that I can actually save some money each week now. I never thought that would be possible!”
